How do I use the dropper bottle, and what size bottle should I order for my animal?
All Earth Lodge tinctures come with droppers, a glass tube with a hollow rubber bulb at one end and a small opening at the other, for drawing in a liquid and expelling it in drops. When you place the tube in the liquid, squeeze and release the bulb at the top to draw in the tincture. When herbalists speak of giving an animal a "dropper" or "dropper-full", we are referring to the amount of liquid that the bulb has been calibrated to draw into the tube, not an actual full tube -- most droppers will pick up 15 drops, and will appear similar to the amount that you see in the photo above. For smaller animals, we offer general dosage guidlines on the bottles according to weight (for example, the bottle might say 1 drop for every 2 LBs body weight, which would be 45 drops for a 90 LB dog, or 10 drops for a larger cat.) For horses, we generally recommend 3-4 droppers, 2 times a day, a goat 2-3 droppers.
Because dosage increases according to animal weight, we recommend buying the 4 oz bottle for animals over 80 LBs, including dogs, goats and other animals -- it will last longer, and is cheaper per ounce than buying the 2oz. bottle. We recommend buying the 2oz. bottle for smaller pets, such as cats and mid-sized to toy dogs, rabbits, birds, etc. The 2oz. bottle is also a good size to invest in if you are buying multiple tinctures to have on hand for acute situations for any size animal.
